How bad could The Predator be, I foolishly thought? The reviews were less than sterling and, alarmingly, the internet film community didn’t appear particularly motivated to either attack or defend The Predator. But could an R-rated sci-fi/action genre film directed by Shane Black, co-written by Black and Fred Dekker, and with an ensemble featuring the likes of Sterling K. Thor (2011)

Dumb, hollow, and shot like a Pepsi commercial, Thor is easily the worst film under the Marvel Studios banner. Director Kenneth Branagh and a team of screenwriters had their work cut for them; the hammer-wielding God of Thunder should count his lucky Asgardian stars that he’s been immortalized in his own trilogy, a decision based more on fealty to the comics than any audience demand. That said, later entries in the series (the irresistably off-kilter Thor: Ragnarok) found a way to make these proceedings unexpectedly fun and fresh. Unfortunately, that is absolutely not the case in this goofy amalgamation of Ray Harryhausen-esque action-adventure and pseudo-Shakespearian drama. Continue reading “Thor (2011)”

The Bad Batch (2016)

The Bad Batch isn’t quite bad enough to make you question writer/director Ana Lily Amirpour’s prior film, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, but it’s bad enough to make you worry her career will never live up that movie’s auspicious brilliance. It’s not bad enough to make you embarrassed for the many fine performers involved, but it’s bad enough to make you shake your head that their combined talents couldn’t create something better. The Bad Batch is bad.
