How bad could The Predator be, I foolishly thought? The reviews were less than sterling and, alarmingly, the internet film community didn’t appear particularly motivated to either attack or defend The Predator. But could an R-rated sci-fi/action genre film directed by Shane Black, co-written by Black and Fred Dekker, and with an ensemble featuring the likes of Sterling K. Brown and Keegan-Michael Key possibly be boring? Continue reading “The Predator (2018)”

Thor (2011)
Dumb, hollow, and shot like a Pepsi commercial, Thor is easily the worst film under the Marvel Studios banner. Director Kenneth Branagh and a team of screenwriters had their work cut for them; the hammer-wielding God of Thunder should count his lucky Asgardian stars that he’s been immortalized in his own trilogy, a decision based more on fealty to the comics than any audience demand. That said, later entries in the series (the irresistably off-kilter Thor: Ragnarok) found a way to make these proceedings unexpectedly fun and fresh. Unfortunately, that is absolutely not the case in this goofy amalgamation of Ray Harryhausen-esque action-adventure and pseudo-Shakespearian drama. Continue reading “Thor (2011)”
The Greasy Strangler (2016)
Why, exactly, does a movie like The Greasy Strangler need to exist? I can imagine potential (and feeble) defenses, but, unfortunately, I’m afraid it’s just not good enough. This has been done before and done better. Continue reading “The Greasy Strangler (2016)”
The Bad Batch (2016)
The Bad Batch isn’t quite bad enough to make you question writer/director Ana Lily Amirpour’s prior film, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, but it’s bad enough to make you worry her career will never live up that movie’s auspicious brilliance. It’s not bad enough to make you embarrassed for the many fine performers involved, but it’s bad enough to make you shake your head that their combined talents couldn’t create something better. The Bad Batch is bad.
Friday The 13th: A New Beginning (1985)
For diehard Friday fans this is a blasphemous disappointment because of its maligned finale – for me it’s awful because it’s just awful. Continue reading “Friday The 13th: A New Beginning (1985)”
Band Of Robbers (2015)
Band Of Robbers, a spin-off from the works of Mark Twain, depicts a grown-up Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer as they continue their search for treasure in modern day rural America. And I kind of hated it. Continue reading “Band Of Robbers (2015)”
