Joshy (2016)

Although Joshy is a tale of a bachelor party gone awry and features some of the standard bacchanalian elements (booze, drugs, strippers), the mood of this indie comedy is more The Big Chill than The Hangover. The cast is a veritable Who’s Who of young comedic actors – Thomas Middleditch, Nick Kroll, Adam Pally, Jenny Slate, Aubrey Plaza, Joe Swanberg, Jake Johnson, Alison Brie – and I was impressed by their ability to find the pathos in revelry. Joshy is probably never quite as funny as you want it to be – it feels a little too mumblecore (an insult if there ever was one), a little too casually improvisational. But that same quality lends an air of understated authenticity to the dramatic scenes, which play quite well.
