Manhattan (1979)

My favorite Woody Allen movie, gorgeously shot in black and white and scored to sumptuous George Gershwin. Woody at his apex, Manhattan is hilarious and wistful and poignant, revolving around the hopelessly foolish attempts of a group of New Yorkers to find happiness. While we follow these narcissistic, self-rationalizing, yet lovable people navigating their way through a never-ending series of failed romantic intrigues and melodramatic crises, we see them juxtaposed against the true wonders of life – the epic scope of the world’s greatest city, the interstellar landscapes of the Hayden Planetarium, the skeletons of prehistoric man hanging in a university lab room. Features one of the greatest openings in film history to boot.
